A couple of months ago, there was an event taken place at Pop Monster in Torrance, CA that showcased multiple artists who created artwork based off of different anime series. The event was called, Otaku Live Art Show. This was were I was able to see Jisoo Kim’s artwork for the first time in person and instantly, I fell in love with her work. I just had to purchase something and the print below was what I got:
Recently, I made sure that I contact her to talk about her work more into detail and just how it all began. Here are the results to our interview:
Interview with Jisoo Kim:
1. What got you into art? What was your inspiration?
Animation and Manhwa aka comic books. I remember Clamp’s Rayearth being my first big inspiration. I only had enough allowance to rent the books so I remember renting them over 20 times. Loved the concept of friendship and girl power with a simple message – no regrets.
2. If you had to describe your type of art style, what would it be?
A mix of East and West. I was born in Korea but spent a good 10 years in the States.
3. We noticed that you had some artwork made for the Otaku Live event at Pop Monster. Are you into anime as well? If so, what is your favorite anime?
My favorite animation film would be Whisper of the Heart a film by the late Yoshifumi Kondō. A film about a young middle school girl, realizing her talents of becoming an artist. Makes me cry every time I watch it. Favorite tv animation would be Honey and Clover, from the comic book with the same name. About a group of students starting Art university, going through hardships and friendships along with real life difficulties and love.
4. What is your breakthrough in the art community? How did you start and get yourself to where you are now?
I don’t think I really broke through 😀 I started drawing as young as I can remember. I went to animation highschool, animation undergrad, and animation gradschool at Calarts. I think I’m slowly becoming to be at peace with myself as a artist, and hopefully people like where it takes my art.
5. If you have any inspiring words to future artists out there, what hints or tips can you give them?
Follow your heart 😀 but seriously, I think it shows when you try to make art for others, so go with your heart.
Here is some of the anime artwork that she has made in the past.
