The KAWAII Artwork by Nemupan!

I’ve always been a fan of Nemupan and her artwork. When I went to Anime NYC this year, I didn’t realize she had a booth there, and I’m not going to lie, inner fan girl came out and I got really excited! It was a pleasure meeting her and I thought it was a great opportunity to talk to her about having an interview. Without any hesitation, she was up for it and so, here was how our interview went:

INTERVIEW WITH NEMUPAN

1. Hi Flo! Why is your alias, Nemupan?
Hi! Well it’s a kinda long story haha. My old user name was “Manly Rainbow”. That used to be an inside joke among my friends. As time passed, that inside joke stopped being funny and I didn’t want to people know me for that name. I went around asking all my friends for help with a new username. A friend came up with Tanoshipan, that translates to “fun bread”, being the direct English translation to a type of Chilean barbecue dish we have here (Choripan). We considered it was a good fit for me, since I always end up drawing food (I love food). But another friend said I should be Nemupan. Nemu translates to sleepy, and I used to have a habit of falling asleep anywhere at anytime. Plus Nemu sounds like my last name. Thanks for the name, Cami!
2. What got you into artwork? Why did you want to become an artist?
I guess I started drawing as a little kid and never stopped. But my decission to become an artist started when I was in my last year of highschool, when you have to decide where to go to college and that stuff. I felt I would never be happy if I went for my “normal career choice” (I wanted to study nutrition), so I went to Animation school. Once I finished that I started working on videogames as concept artist and animator. I drew my stuff on my spare time and I don’t know how, people started liking what I did a lot. That’s when I realized I could actually be a full time artist with all the support I was receiving from my followers on social media and cons I was attending on weekends.
3. How would you describe your art style?
That’s a tough one. I could say it is a heavily anime influenced style sorta thing? Sorry, I’m really bad at describing specifically my art style, so I just normally go by pastel color/cute girl/ Asian culture style.
4. What are your go to art supplies? What tools do you like using?
My art supplies are just huge collection of fine liner pens and sharpies. I like to go with copic fine liners, the disposable ones are my favorite. I also use a lot Uni Color Leads (mint blue, 0.5) for sketching and my favorite eraser of all time is the Mono Black. For paper I go with Bristol, it has such a nice texture (and copics look great on it!). Also one of my mains tools is a Huion light box. It’s super usefull when I want to clean up my sketches.
5. What inspires your artwork that you create?
What inspires me the most is other atist and artwork. When I see artwork I really like, I get super excited to make something inspired on it. I inspire on their take on composition, colors and theme/concept. It makes me want to try and do it my way to see how it goes. But what most inspires me is japanese and pop culture. It’s really hard for me to want to draw something outside those things, they really make me happy.

6. What is your ideal setting to get you in the mood to create your work?
My own desk, on a cool night. Watching Netflix (probably a long running comedy show like Desperate Housewives or Gilmore Girls) in a very comfortable position. I like to be in my own room in a very chill mood to create things or with a really close deadline. I work best with stressful deadlines.
7. What is your favorite artwork you created? Do you have a specific character that you like the most?
My favorite piece of all times will be the Kaze O Kanjimasu (girl on the ceiling looking at the city). I drew that when I was going through a really tough time. The weather was also very rainy that time so it didn’t help my mood either. I had this idea of wanting to break free from the gloomy atmosphere I was going through that time, and this image popped in my head constantly. I didn’t have the abilities to actually draw buildings or backgrounds, but I just wanted to draw that. So it took almost a week to finish that artwork’s lineart. I had to study a bit to learn about  drawing backgrounds, vanishing points, etc. The result made me really happy.
8. Do you have any favorite artists that you look up to? What is your favorite art piece?
I have a lot of favorite artist, I can’t just choose one. This ones are Sarlis, Katorei, Daisukechard, Tofuvi, Pepperonccini, Inio Asano, Yusuke Nakamura and a lot more. I can’t remember right now. I also can’t choose a favorite piece, since it’s always changing, haha.
9. What is your favorite anime series, and why?
Madoka Magica will be my all time favorite. I just love how it takes something so sweet and pure as Mahou Shoujo genre and turns it upside down to something cruel and deep. Plus it has incredible artwork and direction. But if I can call on other amazing anime I love with all my heart I can say Kill la Kill, Utena, Card Captor Sakura, Made in Abyss, March Comes in like a Lion, Chihaya Furu and Shirobako.
10. What advice can you give future artists who would like to get into art or pursue the same career?
Just keep drawing. Practice a lot, try to improve with each piece, try different styles, techniques and try to create opportunitys for yourselfs. Make comics, projects, concepts, games, etc. Art is hard. I have a lot of crazy talented friends who deserve more recognition and get easuly discouraged. I get discouraged too, a lot, but the key is to keep pushing forward. So if you love art, just keep going. Try to find your own voice on what you are doing, be honest with your art and what you want to do, people recognizes and appreciate that honesty.
*11. Do you do commissions for people? If so, what are your rates and how can people get in contact with you?
I usually don’t do commissions. I’m so sorry. But I do make exceptions when people present to me really insteresting projects, artwork or gallery pieces they want to get done. I don’t want to sound like I hate everybody or something, is that usually commissions ask you to draw something very specific, and it discourages me a lot. I don’t put as much heart as I want to, and I feel like the commissioner doesn’t deserve anything but y 100%, but it’s really hard for me. But anyway, you can always contact me at nemupanart@gmail.com.
