INTERVIEW WITH LOWKEY:
1. What is LOWKEY! Geeks?
LOWKEY! Geeks is a streetwear/lifestyle brand that was created to represent those that have a love but aren’t so open to admitting it. For us particularly, its always been a balance of cars, anime, video games, comics, and streetwear. Whether its cars, anime, comics, video games etc, we are all geeks about something and unfortunately not everyone will carry the same enthusiasm.
2. How/Why was LOWKEY! Geeks started? (Where can people find you guys?)
One of our old friends told us, “hey man, its hard to figure you out. You dress all streetwear and you look intimidating but you’re also into anime and all that?” I remember saying,” nah man, I’m just a lowkey geek. Don’t let my demeanor fool you, I’m probably one of the biggest dorks you’ll meet.”
We’re based out of SGV and anyone can find us on out Instagram or website. We’re aiming to exhibit at Anime Impulse and would love to see you guys there!
3. Where do you guys seek your inspiration in starting this brand?
LOWKEY! GEEKS™ has always been a lifestyle for us. We’ve worked for big streetwear names and we felt there were elements missing. There was no sense of community, no sense of passion, only who had the dopest sh*t: the kicks and the clothes.
We did not want to conform to that ideal. Not enough people understand that anime, cosplay, and Itasha are all an art form. We wanted to represent this culture, as well as anyone who has ever been ridiculed for doing something they love. We’re all Geeks in a sense. Some of us own it. Others are just LOWKEY.
4. Since you guys are called geeks, is it only limited to just anime-related products or will it eventually come to the point where it reaches other forms of “geekery”, such as super heroes and sci-fi?
We actually got our start mixing video games and anime and playing with both genres. We’re really into Overwatch and it seems the rest of the Anime world is too. If time permits, we would really love to get into other video game titles and Series that we love.
5. What are your favorite animes that you would recommend?
Marc: We’re old! Not too old though… But I grew up watching Tenchi Muyo, Golden Boy, Gundam Wing, Samurai Champloo, GITS, and Fooly Cooly. Bleach and Gurren Laggan will always have a place in my heart!
Shinri: my favorites are the classics: Studio Ghibli, Sailor Moon, Doraemon, An Pan Man, Shin-Chan and Detective Conan & Chibi Maruko Chan. And Lupin!! I grew up watching these.
In terms of collabs: We have something HUGE in the works right now. We cant disclose any details for the time being, but you can count on the fact that it will be epic!
We recently just released our Overwaifu Series, which has been a blast thanks to everyone, and we actually plan on doing these select few next: Kancolle IOWA X McCree & GITS Major X Soldier 76!!
