Hello Anime Lovers and Otakus!
If you were able to attend Anime Impulse a couple of months ago, there was a Bingo Card that I created for the event. It was made to introduce to you some of the things that should get checked out during the event, which happens to include some of the cosplayers that would be there. I just had to bring that up because Jane Sin was a part of that Bingo Card. Her cosplays were well done and I thought that they should be noticed within the cosplay community.
With that being said, I thought it would be a great idea to start of this new section of our blog to introduce to you guys some great cosplayers out there and to learn more about them on a personal level. To start it all off, I was given the pleasure to interview Jane Sin about her and her cosplays, and this was how the interview went:
INTERVIEW WITH JANE:
1. Jane, your cosplays are awesome! How did you get starting into your cosplay career? Why cosplay? Was there a person that inspired you to get into this work?
Thank you! I started cosplaying a few years ago with my friend Sarah. She thought it would be a fun idea, so we made our first cosplays together. I’ve always loved making things, so cosplay sort of encapsulated all of my interests into one hobby. I became addicted because I love the problem solving experience and the end result of bringing characters to life in our world with my specific perspective.
2. What is your all time favorite anime and why? What anime are you willing to binge watch over and over, and still not get tired of it?
This is a tough question. It has to be a tie between Samurai Champloo and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I love them both equally in different ways. I could probably binge watch Anohana or Your Lie in April and not get tired of them, although tears may be shed in the process. They’re both very beautifully done.
3. What was your very first cosplay that you’ve done for a convention or photoshoot?
The first cosplay I made was Ririchiyo from Inu x Boku SS. I wore this for Anime Expo, and also did my first shoot in it. It was definitely a learning experience! It made me realize how multi-faceted cosplay is, and how important styling, modelling, and makeup is for the entire presentation.
4. Other than cosplaying, what other hobbies that you like to do on your downtime?
I don’t have as much free time for my own hobbies besides cosplay, but I do like to draw, play video games, and plan new concepts for shoots. I would like to do photography again, and I miss doing choreography too.
5. What is your favorite and least favorite cosplay you’ve done?
This is also a tough question. I would say one of my favorite cosplays is Ruby from RWBY. I spent a lot of time on it and I am very pleased with how everything turned out. It is one of the few cosplays that meet most of my internal criteria. My least favorite cosplay is probably Rin from Fate, but I’m going to redeem myself with an Ishtar Rin cosplay this year!
6. What usually inspires you to cosplay a specific character?
There are a lot of factors that determine what cosplay I make. How strongly I resonate with the character, how much I love the design and props, how feasible it would be to make with my current limitations, which conventions are coming up, and how well the character would translate in real life are all things I think about when picking a cosplay to make.
7. What are some of your favorite moments and achievements in your cosplay career?
I think attending my first convention as a cosplayer was a really cool moment. When I wore Ruby to ALA, I met so many cosplayers that are now my good friends. I had a memorable achievement winning a craftsmanship award at Anime California, and attending conventions as a guest was also another cool milestone for me.
8. Who is someone or company that you’ve always wanted to work with?
I would love to meet Li Kovac one day!
9. For the people who want to get into cosplaying, what advice would you give them?
I would say leave a lot of time and room for trial and error, especially if you are new to sewing and crafting. When I first started cosplay, I spent many hours researching and looking up videos and tutorials. Take advantage of the internet and the resources that are available. I would also stress the importance of leaving yourself enough time for a test fit and makeup practice. And remember to have a lot of fun 😀
Thank you guys for reading about our interview hope you guys enjoyed it!
