Anime In Pop Culture: BrandUn Deshay – Had Em All (Music Video)

Peace!

So first and foremost, I always like to start out with wishing you Peace…There is a lot going on in the world these days and anime has always been an escape for me.

The post today deals with one of my favorite subjects, Anime in Pop culture.

One of the main reasons I founded this community with my buddies was in an effort to spread the awareness of the uber dope stuff that goes on in anime.

If you didn’t know, there is actually a pretty huge anime community within the hip hop community. I’ve spoke with Tommy about this from time to time as well as some other folks. We believe that Toonami had a huge impact on how Anime is now becoming more and more mainstream. I’ve also noticed that many hip hop artists have now become a lot less lowkey about their obsession!

In comes BrandUn Deshay.

Originally a member of Odd Future WAAAAY BACK before they took over the spotlight in 2009 or so…BrandUn Deshay is an artist as well as a music producer. I’ve actually had the pleasure of working with him on a record that has actually still yet to be released. At any rate, BrandUn seems to be much more known for his production especially these past few years. He’s worked with artists such as Chance The Rapper on his critically acclaimed Acid Rap, as well as with Mac Miller, Curren$y, Dom Kennedy, SZA (label-mate of Kendrick Lamar), Pro Era (Squad of Joey Bada$$) and MANY more!

As of late, it seems BrandUn has returned to his rap career. And he is going HAM with the anime. I saw this video and lost my mind! He is featuring so much literary illusion to anime, I’ve never seen anyone go that crazy. The title alone alludes to Pokemon via the whole “Gotta Catch Em All” concept, but the video features visual references to Dragon Ball Z by way of the original Playstation classic Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout. It also includes references to Sailor Moon, Spiritied Away, and  My Neighbor Totoro.

Check out this crazy awesome video below to see if you can spot all of the anime!

If you dug this video, you can catch up with BrandUn Deshay in these following places…be sure to let him know OSYM sent ya!
