Zephyo and the “softy” Collection

Soft and dark; these words best describe the new collection by Zephyo.

She is an amazing digital artist that has artwork of people with both a cute and dark side to them.

I was able to interview her about her artwork and the kickstarter project she has dropping.

INTERVIEW WITH ZEPHYO

I’m assuming that Zephyo is your alias name. How did you come up with that name?
Zephyo is my alias; I came up with it because it was my brother’s League of Legends username and I thought it was cool. By the time I wanted to change it, it already had a small following.
How did you start getting into art? What inspired you to get into doing art on the side?
I’ve always been into art; I got my start doodling on walls, my parents yelled at me and gave me a sketchbook, and I haven’t looked back since. I’m still doing art because I love things that look nice and it’s very relaxing and relieves my stress.
What are your favorite anime series? What are some that you are currently watching?
Damn, I’d say all my favorite animes are films, but if I had to pick a series, it’d be Serial Experiments Lain or Madoka Magica. I just love the contrast of cute and dark. I’m not currently watching any series because I’m that type to either a) drop it if it’s boring or b) binge it all in one weekend, but I have a long list of anime films I wanna watch.
How would you describe your type of artwork? What is the style?
I’d say my artwork is like my taste in media: Dark, with a sprinkle of cute. I don’t know what exactly to call that style – semirealism, maybe? Minimalist at times?
Why do you like anime?
Honestly, I’m pretty picky with anime, so I don’t like every anime out there, but for the animes I do like, I like them because the animation style is extremely unique while still being aesthetic, clean, and not too much shading. Also I feel like they focus more on dark, serious subjects whereas Western animations target children and focus on humor. Think anything from Masaaki Yuasa or stuff like Tekkonkinkreet.
For your Kickstarter project, I noticed that you called it “softy” edgy yet soft apparel. What fascinates you with the dark and soft look?
Haha it’s just what I like – I don’t know how to explain it. I like cute things but I’m a very moody person, so I guess I project my dark thoughts onto cute stuff?
What made you want to get into creating clothing?
I like fashion and I like art, but I couldn’t find a shirt I liked that had a 1) quality art print and 2) was more than just a print slapped on a crew neck t shirt with no regards to shirt color/cut/etc. So I made my own stuff.
Of all of the pieces that dropped in this collection, what is your favorite?
Probably the bloom crop sweater or 3am tee, to be honest. I always get compliments when I wear them out and I’m a sucker for compliments haha.
